Synopsis:

YA meets high fantasy in this lush series debut about a girl who never quite fit in — and the reason why...

Evelyn might not love the confines of her village life, but she takes her small freedoms where she can get them. But everything changes when her parents decide it’s time for her to wed. Suddenly she loses her tunic and breeches, her bow, her horse, and gains rigid gowns, restrictive manners, and carriage rides.

The best way to escape is through her dreams, but as they become more and more real, Evelyn begins to worry that she is losing her grasp on reality. It is only when she makes two new friends that the truth is revealed: she is destined for far, far more than even she could imagine.

Review:

Carly Drake's writing is mesmerising. Her creation of life outside the Fey world and within it captivates with her visionary prose.

Evie is a girl who has never felt like she belonged to her own world. Her father has only a small part in this story but he loves her dearly. Her mother has a constant dislike of her and spends all her time trying to tame Evie, who lives in a small castle, and loves nothing more than escaping to the woods, feeling at home with the forest. She hates eating meat and loves to sleep on a bed made of moss. But Evie and her family must answer an invitation to the Kings court.

When they arrive at the kings castle, Evie's mother wants her to become more ladylike, wear full dresses instead of her forest clothes and be good enough for the princess to ask Evie to become one of her own ladies in waiting. A job Evie cares little about.
But in that castle she hears more, sees more and begins to learn, with the help of Prince Liam and Lord Devon, more about herself than she can ever imagine.

Her dreams are occupied by a strange yet familiar lady and Evie feels the draw to another world and slowly understands that she isn't altogether human. What happens next turns her life on its head and Evie will never be the same again.

If you love paranormal, vampires and werewolves then this Fey tale has a small twist in this well thought out tale. The vampires want to rid themselves of their immortal shell and become fey again, as they once were.

What I liked most about this book was Evie. She follows her own path. She has guts. She says no and means it. She doesn't pretend to be anyone except who she is.

This is a solid book with all the things you love about when reading of the Seelie and Unseelie courts. We have King's trying to outwit forbidden loves, Vampires against Fey and Evie makes an unusual choice in the end. The quest isn't over yet for Evie. I look forward to reading the next in the series.

A good job well done by Carly Drake. I really liked this.

About the Author

You can find Carly Drake Eldridge here:

Carly Drake loves books, but loving them was not enough -- she has to write them too. As a reader and as an author, she gravitates toward period pieces and supernatural works, stories that offer the advantage of escape to a different time and set of rules. Mix a magical world with the drama of young adults discovering who they are, or in some cases what they are, and you have a recipe for her favorite brand of make-believe.
